Discourse-Based Reasoning for Controlled Natural Languages

چکیده

Logic-based controlled natural languages usually provide some facility for compositional representation, minimally including sentence level coordination and sometimes subordination. Although these compositional forms suffice for representing short passages, they can become unwieldy for expressing entire paragraphs and documents. This paper describes an approach to representing larger composite texts in a controlled natural language. This approach, called discourse-based reasoning, integrates rhetorical structure theory with argumentation theory to define a model for defining composite structures and argument strategies in an ontological representation. Rhetorical structures are used to represent controlled texts, and argument strategies are defined for reasoning about interactions between structures. This provides the basis for expressing, summarizing, and interacting with explanatory and argumentative discourse. This would expand the scope of problems that may be addressed using controlled natural languages.

Towards Structural Natural Language Formalization: Mapping Discourse to Controlled Natural Language

The author describes a conceptual study towards mapping grounded natural language discourse representation structures to instances of controlled language statements. This can be achieved via a pipeline of preexisting state of the art technologies, namely natural language syntax to semantic discourse mapping, and a reduction of the latter to controlled language discourse, given a set of previous...

Controlled Natural Languages for Knowledge Representation

This paper presents a survey of research in controlled natural languages that can be used as high-level knowledge representation languages. Over the past 10 years or so, a number of machine-oriented controlled natural languages have emerged that can be used as high-level interface languages to various kinds of knowledge systems. These languages are relevant to the area of computational linguist...

Merits of a Temporal Modal Logic for Narrative Discourse Generation

Just as there exists varied uses for computational models of narrative, there exists a wide variety of languages aimed at representing stories. A number of them have historic roots in automated generation, for which these languages have to be limited in order to make the generation process computationally feasible. Other are focused on story understanding, with close ties to natural language ma...

Controlled Natural Languages for Knowledge Representation and Reasoning

Controlled natural languages (CNLs) are effective languages for knowledge representation and reasoning. They are designed based on certain natural languages with restricted lexicon and grammar. CNLs are unambiguous and simple as opposed to their base languages. They preserve the expressiveness and coherence of natural languages. In this paper, it mainly focuses on a class of CNLs, called machin...
